Four Bears Named to 2022-23 NHL Training Camp Rosters

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four former Bears have been named to NHL Training Camp rosters ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, split between three forwards: Garnet Hathaway ’14 (Washington Capitals), Sam Lafferty ’18 (Chicago Blackhawks), and Max Willman ’18 (Philadelphia Flyers ) and one defenseman, Zach Guittari ’20 (New York Rangers).

Hathaway has spent the last three seasons with the Capitals after five full seasons in the Calgary organization to begin his professional career. The Washington forward skated in 76 games last season and set career-highs in goals (16) and points (26) while matching a career-high in assists (12).

Hathaway has skated in 373 career NHL games and looks to become just the fourth Bear to reach the 400-game milestone.

Hathaway served as an assistant captain at Brown as a junior and senior in 2012-13 and 2013-14. As a Brunoian, Hathaway skated in 121 career games and finished his collegiate career with 20 goals and 58 points.

Lafferty enters his second season with the Chicago organization after being traded from Pittsburgh to the Original Six club in January 2022. In total, Lafferty skated in 56 NHL games in 2021-22 and finished the season with five goals and 13 points. In his career, Lafferty has skated in 140 career games and can become the sixth Bear to reach the 200-game milestone.

The Pennsylvania native enters his fifth professional season and most recently represented the United States at the 2022 IIHF World Championship in Finland. He was the first Bear in nearly 40 years to don the Red, White, and Blue at the IIHF Worlds.

Lafferty played 124 career games at Brown while serving as an assistant captain as a junior and senior in 2016-17 and 2017-18. He tallied 79 career points while at Brown before spending his first full professional season with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2018-19, posting 49 points in 70 games.

Willman enters his second training camp with the Flyers and first under new head coach John Tortorella this fall. Willman spent the 2021-22 season split between Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley (AHL) and ultimately dressed in 41 NHL games.

Willman skated in 99 career games at Brown before playing a graduate transfer season at Boston University in 2018-19 to finish his NCAA career with 135 games played and 51 career points.

Guittari enters his second training camp with the Rangers as he begins his third professional season. The former Brown captain has spent each of the last two seasons with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL). In 79 career AHL games, Giuttari has four goals and 20 points.

The Warwick, Rhode Island native captained the Bears as a senior in 2019-20, posting four goals and 11 assists in 31 games played. In his collegiate career, Giuttari skated in 121 games while posting 54 points.
