Local roundup: Legionnaires fall to Nats; Sting players at NHL camps

The Sarnia Legionnaires are still hunting for their first win after falling to the London Nationals 8-3 on Wednesday in London.

Dylan Dupuis scored two goals and Adam Maitland had one for the Legionnaires, who are 0-3-0-0 in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Legionnaires goalie Ethan Everaert made 34 saves before a crowd of 350 at the Western Fair Sports Centre.

The loss kicked off a stretch of three games in four days for the Legionnaires, who’ll host the LaSalle Vipers at 7:10 pm Thursday at Pat Stapleton Arena.

They’ll go to Pelham for the GOJHL Showcase with games Saturday against the St. Catharines Falcons and Sunday versus the Pelham Panthers.

On Wednesday, the Nationals (3-0-0-0) led 3-0 before the 11-minute mark. They were up 3-1 after one period and 7-3 after two.

Ex-Legionnaire Bradyn Santavy had three assists.

Jacob Julien, Talan Palmer, Riley Wood, Owen McGowan, Dylan Dundas, Lucas Chard, Nolan Milne and Sam O’Reilly scored. Carter Froggett made 33 saves.

Five Sting players attend NHL camps

Five of 10 Sarnia Sting players who attended NHL rookie camps and prospect tournaments have been invited to NHL training camps.

Defensemen Ryan Mast and Chandler Romeo are at camp with the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators, respectively. Goalie Ben Gaudreau is with the San Jose Sharks, forward Marcus Limpar-Lantz is with the Detroit Red Wings and forward Sandis Vilmanis is with the Florida Panthers.

Returning to Sarnia are forwards Ty Voit (Toronto), Nolan Burke (Buffalo), Max Namestnikov (Vancouver) and Theo Hill (St. Louis) and defenseman Ethan Ritchie (Buffalo).

The Sting will play a home-and-home series against the Spitfires on Thursday in Windsor and at 7:05 pm Saturday at Progressive Auto Sales Arena to end their exhibition schedule.

Lions shut out in OCAA men’s soccer

The St. Clair Saints scored five second-half goals in a 7-0 win over the Lions in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s soccer Wednesday at Lambton College.

The Lions (1-3-0) were outshot 25-3.

Ky Duong stopped 14 of 16 shots in the first half, then Kyle McAuley and James Brown combined to stop four of nine in the second half.

The Lions will visit Sheridan on Saturday, Oct. 1, and Humber on Sunday, Oct. 2.
