GREENVILLE, SC– On the opening day of the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic, Georgia Tech picked up four doubles wins and four singles wins. The three-day tournament played at the Mickel Tennis Center at Furman University featured two rounds of doubles play and the first round of singles matches on Friday.
To kick things off in the morning, four doubles teams represented the Yellow Jackets. The double pair of Monika Dedaj and Rosie Garcia Gross will compete for the doubles flight four title on Saturday after going undefeated on the day. The Jackets swept South Carolina’s Chloe Narboni and Annie Jennings, 8-0, before collecting an 8-2 decision over Mississippi State’s Sydney Hrehor and Alessia Tagliente to claim a spot in the final.
Tech’s No. 9-ranked doubles team of Ava Hrastar and Kylie Bilchev won their opening match, 8-6, against Vanderbilt’s Celia Belle Mohr and Amy Stevens, while Kate Sharabura partnered with Mahak Jain to down Eleni Louika and Sophia Hatton of Clemson, 8-4.
In singles play, Bilchev, Hrastar, Garcia Gross and Dedaj all collected wins to move into the semifinals of their respective flights. Bilchev dropped only two games en route to a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Holly Staff of Vanderbilt, while Hrastar rallied back to defeat Elise Mills (South Carolina), 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Garcia Gross and Dedaj both picked up hard-fought wins in flights seven and eight, respectively. Facing Lindsay Zink of North Carolina, Garcia Gross pocketed a 7-6 (6), 6-4 triumph, while Dedaj forced Chloe Narboni of South Carolina into a pair of tiebreakers to prove victorious in a super tiebreak, 6-7 (6) , 7-6 (4), 10-7.
Play continues on Saturday with the final round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles. Action begins at 9 am
