dixon: Dixon first mobile phone maker to get sop under PLI

  • by

Dixon Technologies, an Indian contract manufacturer, has become the first producer of mobile phones to get approval for the disbursement of incentives under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

The company’s claim for ₹53 crore for the first quarter of operations – from October to December 2021 – has been approved. It is in the process of filing claims for the remaining period.

The Noida-based company’s proposal was the only one that came up before an empowered group, chaired by Niti Aayog chief executive Parameswaran Iyer, for approval. Although Samsung had also filed claims for FY20-21, the Ministry of Electronics and IT had sought more information from the company and hence its proposal was not put up in the meeting.

“Dixon’s case was taken up by the empowered group and our submissions have been approved. It is the first PLI that has been approved by the government,” company chairman Sunil Vachani told ET. “This is a huge confidence booster for us and the entire industry which is bound to pave the way for more investments in this sector.”

Dixon is committed to increasing investment in building scale, creating a component ecosystem and development of design, he said.

The incentive amount will be paid to Dixon in the next few days.

ET reported in its Wednesday edition that the empowered group was scheduled to meet on Friday (September 9) to take the final call on the submissions of the selected companies.

“We have disbursed roughly Rs 50 crore for Dixon. We expect to clear the incentives of other companies over the next fortnight. There may be some delay only in cases where the auditors have raised some questions on the value addition methodology and the outcome claimed by a couple of companies,” a senior government official said.

Apple’s contract manufacturers Hon Hai (Foxconn) and Wistron are also in the process of filing claims for 2021-22. Samsung Electronics was the only company to meet production targets for 2020-21.
