A LOOK AT THE FUTURE: What Jackson Jobe learned in his first season of pro ball

Probable starting pitchers: Tigers LHP Tyler Alexander (3-8, 4.83 ERA) vs. Mariners RHP Marco Gonzales (9-12, 3.97 ERA).

Tigers lineup: TBA

Game notes: The Tigers have been a bit more competitive lately, winning five of their last eight. They took two of three from the Texas Rangers, split a series with the San Francisco Giants and took two of three from the Los Angeles Angels.

Harold Castro, arguably the Tigers’ top hitter this season, has continued his solid work. As he nears 100 at-bats for the month of August, he’s hitting .298 with six doubles on the month. In fact, Castro has hit .280 or better each month except for June, when he hit .246. After a tough July (.231/.280/.359), Riley Greene has been a bit better this month (.264/.301/.425). Javier Baez is 2-for-5 with a home run vs. Gonzales, and Eric Haase has taken him deep as well.

The Tigers beat Gonzales last season, scoring four runs in four innings. The Mariners are finally careening towards the playoffs thanks to an 18-7 July and a 15-10 August heading into the series. Julio Rodriguez, who just signed a nine-figure contract, looks like the American League Rookie of the Year with his 21 home runs and 23 stolen bases over his first 111 career games. But the offense goes much deeper with Eugenio Suarez leading the team in homers (24) and RBI (72) and Ty France leading in batting average (.278) and on-base percentage (.346). Don’t forget about JP Crawford, who’s slashing .246/.335/.351 but battling a pec injury.
