‘A Great Role Model’: Golf World Reacts to Rory McIlroy’s Incredible Gesture After Winning the FedExCup

Winning a tournament is not important, but winning people’s hearts is. The newly crowned FedExCup champion, Rory McIlroy, proved it today by apologizing to his fellow golfer’s family after winning the 2022 Tour Championship. And the golf world is nothing but praising him for his kind gesture.

“I’m sorry.” Those were the first words when McIlroy saw Scottie Scheffler’s parents in the crowd after winning his third FedExCup title.

Notably, Scheffler started the tournament with a 10-under par and a two-shot lead as the No. 1 in the FedExCup standings. With his impressive game, the golfer scored 65, 66, and 66 in the first three rounds and held a one-shot lead going into the final round.

However, he blew his chance to win his first FedExCup trophy by scoring 3-over 73 in round 4. He finished in second place on the leaderboard, sharing the spot with the South Korean golfer Sungjae Im.

Rory McIlroy thinks Scottie Scheffler deserved the FedExCup title

McIlroy won the event with a one-shot lead over Scheffler and Sungjae Im. However, the 4-time major champion couldn’t help but feel apologetic towards Scheffler’s family since he thought Scottie Scheffler deserved the title since he played well not just in the tournament but the entire year.

“He deserved it,” the Irishman said as he hugged the 2022 Masters champion’s father. “He’s had an unbelievable year.”

As McIlroy mentioned, other than his impressive game at the Tour Championship, Scheffler had an impressive career in the 2021-2022 season. His hunt for the titles began when he first got the taste of winning at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Since then, he has won three times, including the Masters Tournament. Additionally, he has also finished in second place three times.

Notably, he topped the FedExCup standings until McIlroy won the FedExCup Playoffs. He is also the world’s no. 1 golfer, according to the OWGR standings.

Fans’ reaction to McIlroy’s apology towards the Scheffler family

McIlroy didn’t have to apologize to Scheffler’s family for winning the tournament. Yet, he did, and such a gesture of his made the golf fans think highly of him.

Notably, Scottie Scheffler’s father, mother, and wife congratulated McIlroy for winning the title. The golf world got impressed with the way they handled the situation and congratulated the golfer who won over their son and husband. Therefore, the fans appreciated them for their manners through their comments.
