One of the most difficult days on the NFL calendar is arriving. The NFL’s 53-man roster deadline this year is 4 pm ET on Aug. 30. Teams will have to whittle down a good chunk of their rosters.
The NFL roster maximum is 80 ahead of cut day. That means that each team could need to release as many as 27 players to comply with the NFL’s roster rules. That means as many as 864 players could find themselves looking for work as the season is set to begin.
The good news is that many of these players will be signed to practice squad contracts. Each NFL team will have up to 16 practice squad spots available thanks to rule changes that were implemented before the 2020 season. That will give many of the released at least a temporary opportunity to remain with their clubs.

Some players may still land on a 53-man roster even after being cut because of the NFL’s injured reserve rules. If a player is placed on IR before the 53-man roster deadline passes, they are automatically out for the season; if a player is placed on it after the deadline, they can be activated as soon as three weeks after placement.
So, there will be lots of roster shuffling even after cut day passes. But for most players, the critical decision will come at some point before 4 pm ET on Tuesday. Whether the call is made immediately after a team’s final preseason game or just moments before the deadline will depend on the team.
