Bluejay Men’s Soccer Shines Once More in 6-1 Win Over Rutgers

Omaha, Neb. — The Creighton men’s soccer team delivered another impressive performance on Sunday, Aug. 28 as the Bluejays took down Rutgers 6-1.

The win pushed Creighton to 2-0-0 on the season, while Rutgers fell to 1-1-0.

Creighton got on the board early and often, scoring three times in each half of the win over the Scarlet Knights. Senior Callum Watson struck first in the fourth minute (3:47), blasting a centered ball into the back of the net from the top of the box. Senior Dominic Briggs and sophomore Giorgio Probo set the play in motion with assists.

The second goal saw Briggs and Probo team up once more, this time with Briggs sending a ball near the center once more this time to Probo. The Italian native touched the ball off a defender into the right corner.

Creighton’s third tally of the night may have been the most impressive as a defender Mark O’Neill blasted in a goal from 35-yards away to drop the jaws of fans, teammates and coaches alike.

After halftime the Scarlet Knights tried to rally as Rutgers scored its first goal in the 55th minute. The goal came from Joey Zalinsky, while Matthew Acosta and Jackson Temple notched assists.

The Rutgers’ goal seemed to reignite Creighton’s competitive juices as the Bluejays scored three goals in the next 10 minutes.

Sophomore Owen O’Malley took a pass from Jackson Castrothen beat a pair of defenders to score from the left side of the goal box to make it 4-1 in the 60th minute (59:12).

The Bluejays’ fifth and sixth goals came as Probo found junior Duncan McGuire on a corner, then sent a lofting pass to the head of McGuire in the 63rd minute (62:37).

Creighton will return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 2 with a 6:30 pm match against Saint Louis in Morrison Stadium
