USU Soccer Remains Unbeaten With 3-3 Draw Against Grand Canyon

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State soccer (2-0-2) remained unbeaten on the season following a 3-3 draw against Grand Canyon (2-1-1) on Sunday afternoon.

Sarah Taylor opened the scoring for the Aggies when a ball was played over the head of a GCU defender in the fifth minute and the senior calmly toe-poked the ball into the back of the net. Alex Day headed a Lopes’ clearance back into Utah State’s attacking third to begin the play and Rine Yonahmaking her first career start as an Aggie, played the ball over the top as each collected an assist on the goal.

Grand Canyon tied the game at 1-1 in the 41st minute, but the deadlock was short-lived as a junior midfielder London Miller scored her first goal as an Aggie less than one minute later. Sophomore wing Bizzy Arevalo played an over-lapping ball to junior defender Kylie Olsen who beat her defender and fired a cross into the box. Miller redirected the ball with her head into the back of the net to give the Aggies a 2-1 advantage going into the break.

The Lopes regained the lead in the second half with goals in the 52nd and 55th minute, before senior forward Sammie Murdock recorded her second goal of the year in the 79th minute to tie the game at 3-3 all. Murdock’s goal was also the second from a header as Miller logged her third point of the day by playing the ball ahead to the freshman defender. Talia Winder. Winder then sent a cross through the box, finding the head of Murdock who put it in the back of the net. Miller and Winder became the 12th and 13th Aggie to record an assist on the year.

Grand Canyon preserved the tie in the waning seconds of the game when Taylor got her head on a ball inside the six-yard box with only 20 seconds to play. The ball was directed to the lower left of the goal, but GCU keeper Jordan Ferguson made her one and only save of the match, keeping the score knotted up at 3 apiece.

Miller led the Aggies with four shots and was followed by Heidi Smith with three and Taylor with two as Utah State totaled 13 during the match. Grand Canyon entered the contest having allowed only 10 combined shots over its first three games of the season. GCU finished the game with 12 shots.

Utah State will be back on the road for its next contest, playing at UC Riverside on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 8:30 p.m. (MT). The game will mark the second-straight MW opponent for the Highlanders after a 4-1 loss at Boise State in their last match.
