Aug. 28—Madison Central’s Clay Pendergrass turned in a remarkable performance on Saturday at the Trinity Shamrock Invitational in Prospect.
The senior shot a -9, 63 — his best round ever in a high school event.
Remarkably, though, he didn’t claim the individual championship.
Michael Long of Trinity posted a -11, 61, to claim the title. Pendergrass finished second and Central’s Warren Thomas tied for third after shooting a -5, 67.
Led by Pendergrass and Thomis, the Indians finished with a team score of -7, 281 and tied for third.
Taylor County (-15, 273) took first place. St. Xavier (-9, 279) was second and Trinity (-7, 281) tied for third with Central.
Central’s Radney Bales shot a +3, 75, and tied for 33rd. Mason Hamrick shot a +4, 76, and tied for 40th and Braydon Bond finished at +11, 83, tying for 62nd.
Pendergrass had birdies on No. 1, 2 and 5, then posted an eagle on No. 7. After a birdie on No. 9, the senior made the turn at -6.
Pendergrass — who already has four tournament titles this season — went on to birdie No. 10, 12, 16 and 18 and had just one bogey — No. 11.
Thomis had seven birdies — No. 1, 6, 7, 11, 14, 17 and 18, with just two bogies.
Bales (4, 8, 11, 12) and Hamrick (1, 4, 7 18) each had four birdies.
Central is set to return to action next Saturday at Boones Trace National.
