Whitchurch: Community Hospital Friends delighted with golf day

AFTER the restrictions of Covid-19 put a dampener on fundraising for a Whitchurch hospital charity, a return to the greens of Hawkstone Park was greatly awaited.

The Friends of Whitchurch Community Hospital held its annual golf ay at the scenic but challenging course this week, with the weather Gods smiling friendly on their return.

Rosemary Powell, from the League of Friends, admitted they had been disappointed, but understanding about the Covid-19 postponements across two years, but thanked all those who made it a stunning return.

“After two years the Friends of Whitchurch Community Hospital were delighted to be able to host a charity AM-AM Golf day at Hawkstone Park Golf Course,” she said.

“Thirty one teams of four enjoyed a round of golf in ideal weather.

“There were men’s teams, mixed teams and ladies’ teams.

“In the winning ladies team were Cheryl Greaves, Louis Gough, Wendy Simpson and Caroline Hollins. Caroline Hollins also won the prize for nearest to the pin. Sarah Wynn won the prize for the longest drive.

“In the winning men’s team were Robin McNess, John Hampson, Peter Edwards and Ashley Burdock. Nearest the pin winner was Alan Owen and the longest drive was Teddy Hall.”

Rosemary singled out extra special support for the event, including the businesses and individuals who helped organize and sponsor the event.

And she explained how the money will be spent once it is all counted and processed.

Rosemary added: “The Friends would like to thank everyone who took part and all those who purchased draw tickets and provided the prizes.

“Our special thanks go to Percy and Gill Mellor for all their hard work in helping to organize the event and to Peter Williams for admirably scoring all the teams – he was at his desk for nearly eight hours.

“Thanks also go to Jason Wainwright for helping in the production of the sponsor boards and finally to all those companies who sponsored a hole and to the committee members who helped before and during the day.

“Without all this help the event would not be possible.

“The money raised from this event goes towards providing equipment and comforts for the patients and staff at our wonderful local hospital.”

Whitchurch Community Hospital is based in Claypit Street.
