Young rugby stars take on first ever sports fixture on Weymouth Beach

ASPIRING young rugby stars from across Dorset and Somerset will be taking the giant step up to their first ever sports fixture on Weymouth Beach over the bank holiday weekend.

Spectators are welcome to enjoy the unique entertainment of two-year-olds playing tag rugby.

Starting from as young as 22 months, the ‘Rugbytots’ learn vital skills such as passing, catching and kicking, and quickly progress to a point where they can play tag as part of a strong team.

Rugbytots is a positive and progressive group celebrating all successes of the boys and girls. Organizers say the tournament allows the children to create a lifetime memory as their first ever sports fixture on Weymouth Beach.

Tournament partners McDonald’s Weymouth are providing healthy snacks and drinks as well as cool t-shirts for all children. Rugbytots are also partnered with Tractor Ted, which is bringing amazing prizes, and also Abbotsbury Tourism, helping to welcome all the families to Weymouth by providing an ideal family experience while in town.

The beach tournament, taking place opposite Alexandra Gardens, is being run by local Rugbytots organiser, Gareth Turnbull, who is also offering free ‘intro to rugby sessions’ for any families who are near Weymouth Beach on Saturday and want to get their little one involved .

Open day places on Saturday, August 27 are free; to book a place, contact [email protected] or call 07717 753322.

Mr Turnbull said: “We have very high standards and invest a huge effort into our coaching. Rugbytots coaches absolutely love their job. Classes need to be the best they can be every time, full of fun, energy and positivity, and our lead coaches have that amazing natural ability to get young children to participate.

“The most rewarding element is helping children overcome their challenges. This powerful motivator often comes up with foster children and children with special educational needs, where we see the impact of our coaching and the children’s hunger to learn. Teaching them to play as a team and celebrating all achievements is important, no matter how small they seem.”

Rugbytots classes run every Sunday in Weymouth and Saturday in Dorchester. Class times and booking information is available at www.rugbytots.co.uk
