Women’s Soccer Welcomes No. 3 Rutgers Before Traveling To Vanderbilt

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence College women’s soccer team will host No. 3 Rutgers University on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 6:00 pm on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, RI. The Friars will then travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face Vanderbilt University on Sunday, Aug. 28. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm et. Providence began the season with a 1-1 overall record with a win over Colgate in their home opener on Aug. 18.

FRIARS VS. COLGATE… Providence shut out Colgate University, 1-0, in its home opener on Thursday, Aug. 18 in Providence, RI Senior Ava Brandt (Chester, NJ) scored the game winner for the Friars off a cross pass from a graduate student Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) in the first half. Goalkeeper Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, Mass.) earned her first shutout of the season.

FRIARS VS. BOSTON UNIVERSITY… The Friars fell to Boston University, 2-1, on Sunday, Aug. 21 in Boston, Mass. Junior Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Friars off a pass down the middle from Grillakis.

FRIARS IN 2021… The Friars finished with a 10-7-3 overall record and a 5-3-2 mark in BIG EAST play. Providence finished in fifth place in the conference and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993. The Friars fell to Hofstra, 3-0, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Friars earned five All-BIG EAST selections in 2021. Junior Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors while junior Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.) and senior Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.) earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. Sophomores Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) and Maria Paveglio (Lake Orion, Mich.) were selected to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.

FRIARS PICKED FOURTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON POLL… The BIG EAST conference announced its women’s soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Thursday, Aug. 11. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Xavier and Butler.

Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes started in all 20 games for the Friars. She led Providence in points (22), goals (nine) and was tied for second on the team in assists (four). At the conclusion of the season, she earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team.

NEWCOMERS…Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season, including two graduate transfers and seven freshmen. The graduate transfers are Hannah Pinkus (Manchester, Vt.) and Maddie Coyne (Ewing, NJ). Pinkus played four years as a midfielder at Colgate University and Coyne played in the backline at George Washington University for four seasons.

The incoming freshmen class includes Colleen Casey (Franklin, Mass.), Thaea mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada), Abbey Finn (Dedham, Mass.), Alanna Coffey (Warwick, RI), Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada), Anna Faust (Grafton, Wis.) and Ava Beckett (Ajax, Canada).

FRIARS AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS… The Friars are 1-4-3 all-time against ranked opponents. Providence earned its first win over a ranked opponent on Oct. 17, 2017, when they defeated No. 15 Georgetown, 1-0, in Providence, RI

FAMILY AFFAIR… Friar goalkeeper Emma Bodmer will play against her sister, Olivia Bodmer, who is a freshman goalkeeper for Rutgers. Prior to joining the Scarlet Knights, Olivia played four years of varsity soccer at Notre Dame High School and was named to the All-American Game watch list.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST #3 RUTGERS… The Friars hold a 2-16-1 record against the Scarlet Knights. Last season, the Friars fell to Rutgers, 5-1, in Piscataway, NJ

SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS… No. 3 Rutgers enters Thursday’s match with a 2-0 overall record to start the season with wins over New Mexico and UNLV.

In 2021, the Scarlet Knights finished 19-4-2 overall and made it to the Semifinal Round of the 2021 Women’s Soccer College Cup. In addition, Rutgers won the 2021 Big Ten Conference Championship and was picked first in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. The Scarlet Knights return nine starters including goalkeeper Megan McCelland, sophomore forward Riley Tiernan and junior midfielder Sara Brocious who were named Preseason Big Ten Players to Watch.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST VANDERBILT… This will mark the first time that the Friars and Commodores face each other in program history.

SCOUTING THE COMMODORES…Vanderbilt started off its 2022 season 2-0 overall with wins over Evansville and Purdue.

The Commodores finished their 2021 campaign with an 8-8-3 overall record. In the SEC Preseason Poll, Vanderbilt was chosen to finish sixth. The Commodores returned 19 players to their roster this season. Leading scorer from 2021, Reagan Kelley, returns to Vanderbilt for her fifth year in 2022 after tallying 19 points on eight goals and three assists last season.
