Big Red golf splits a tri with Bears, JM | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW CUMBERLAND — Big Red took on Oak Glen and John Marshall in a tri-match Tuesday at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course and placed in the middle of the three, topping the host Golden Bears and coming up just short of the Monarchs to move to 7- 2 on the season.

John Marshall led the way with a team score of 164, followed by Steubenville’s 175 and Oak Glen’s 182.

The Monarchs’ Colton Spowls and Ethan Cook were co-medalists with a score of 38 turned in by each.

Big Red’s Frankie Vostatek finished right behind with a score of 39.

Also for Steubenville, Waylon Hayes shot a 44, Anthony Coleflesh shot a 49 and Chris Elliott finished with a 43.

Oak Glen’s efforts were led by Brady Chaney and Colby Vega, who each turned in scores of 42, while Logan Weekley shot a 47 and Preston Cole fired a 51.

Crusaders blank JM

STEUBENVILLE — The Catholic Central girls soccer team picked up its second win of the season in as many matches, topping John Marshall 6-0 on Wednesday.

Maria Meyer had a hat trick for the Crusaders, while Maria Mitch, Jackie O’Karma and Ellen Rohde each tallied a goal for Central.

O’Karma added a pair of assists, while Kathryn Bolster and Sophia Walsh also assisted on goals.

Megan Brown and Josey Urbanczyk each made a save in goal to pitch the shutout.

Central is set to take on Cambridge on the road on Saturday.
