Gloversville boys’ soccer getting set for the new season

Gloversville boys’ soccer coach Jim Yanno watches practice on Tuesday.

GLOVERSVILLE — After losing 10 players from last season’s team, the Gloversville boys’ soccer team heads into the 2022 campaign with some holes to fill.

“We lost several players from last year’s team,” Gloversville boys’ soccer coach Jim Yanno said. “They had a lot of varsity experience among them.”

Gloversville lost a group that included Bryen Belknap, Drew Callen, Noah Clo, Doug Cook, Dane Dillenback, Cooper Graham, Justin Kemmet, Thomas Kluska, Kazuma Lomanto and Alex Rosmarino.

The Dragons went 8-7-2 overall last season, losing 2-0 to La Salle in the Section II Class A quarterfinals.

Although it lost plenty, Gloversville does return some experience this season.

“We’ve got some returning players that should be pretty strong,” said coach Yanno.

This year’s squad includes seniors Angel Perez, Sawyer Pierce, Jordan Yanno, Lucas Iorio and Gary Meher, as well as juniors Rocco Insognia, Evan Renda and Preston Simmons.

“We’ve got some players with quite a bit of varsity experience,” coach Yanno said. “Some of our junior varsity players got some varsity experience last year as well.”

Rounding out the Dragons’ roster are sophomores Jordan Collar, Fernando Perez, John Smith, Connor Kahn and Nathan Terrell, along with freshmen Dylan Bronk, Gavin Malone, Dylan Buyce, Julian Briskie and Sam Alikhan.

“We’ve got a great group of guys with great attitudes,” coach Yanno said. “They’re eager to learn and nobody has got a chip on their shoulder. Everybody here is just working to get better.”

Yanno will be assisted by Riley Yager and Cam Biche this season.

“We’re just trying to get better with each day, each practice and each game,” coach Yanno said. “We’re working on developing our individual and collective skills.”

Gloversville is scheduled to open its season Sept. 7 at Queensbury at 4:30 pm The Dragons are slated to host South Glens Falls on Sept. 9 in their home opener at 4:30 p.m
