Home of golf now the home of love

ST ANDREWS is known as the home of golf but for one couple it will now be the home of love.

David Sharp got down on one knee at the famous Swilcan Bridge on the St Andrews Old Course just over a week before the venue hosted The Open.

Now, the 52-year-old and his wife-to-be Lindsey Geddes are planning their big day.

David, who works as a greenkeeper at Haddington Golf Club, told the Courier he was not nervous ahead of the life-changing moment.

The Haddington resident said: “We were back in St Andrews – that was where we went on our first date three years ago.

“She thought something was up because I was dressed a bit smart for just going to St Andrews.

“We had a few drinks then went for a walk along the Old Course and they were getting ready for The Open.

“It was there I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She said yes!”

Father-of-four David and Lindsey, who lives in Edinburgh, met through the online dating website Match.

Now, the two golf fans are enjoying their engagement before setting a date to tie the knot.

David, who has worked at the golf club for five years, said: “I play golf a lot; she is just getting back into it. I have reintroduced her to golf.

“It is something for us to do together.”

David and mum-of-two Lindsey, who works as a carer in Edinburgh, got engaged a fortnight before Cameron Smith won his maiden Major at the Fife course.

And David and Lindsey were not alone for their own historic moment.

He added: “There are always people there taking pictures on the bridge.

“There was an American couple with their son and they asked: ‘Do you want me to take a picture? I hope I don’t spoil the picture.’

“I got down on one knee and you could see her shaking and trying to take the picture. There was another older couple and a middle-aged guy videoing the Old Course and what was going on.”
