CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — After a strong start to the season, UNI soccer looks to build a winning streak on Sunday afternoon.

After a 2-1 win over Grand View, the Panthers look to do the same on Sunday against the South Dakota Coyotes. UNI and the Coyotes played each other twice in the 2021 season, an uncommon occurrence for a non-conference matchup. South Dakota came out on top in both games, winning in a 1-0 shutout of the Panthers each time. Playing earlier in the season, UNI will hope to take the Coyotes off guard and have two wins to start the season.

THE PANTHERS:
– UNI soccer began the 2022 season with a bang, winning their first game against NAIA Grand View 2-1. The Panthers scored on a penalty kick from forward Lauren Heinsch and late game shot from midfielder Siri Ott.
– Head Coach Bruce Erickson is one win away from matching the program record for most wins by a head coach. Former head coach James Price currently holds the record with 40 wins over seven seasons.
– Freshman forward Sydney Burskey recorded her first collegiate point in Thursday’s game against Grand View. Burskey had the lone assist on the game winning goal in the 84th minute, taking a corner kick that resulted in Ott’s shot on goal.
– Parking for Sunday’s game at UNI Soccer Field has been adjusted for the season. Parking is now available on W 22nd Street in the grassy area across from the former softball field on UNI’s campus.

THE COYOTES:
– South Dakota began their 2022 season with a matchup against former MVC Champions Loyola Chicago. The Coyotes dropped their first game of the year 1-0 to the Ramblers at home in Vermillion.
– In their game against Loyola, the Coyotes recorded more than half of their shots in the second half. Of the six shots that South Dakota made in the game, three found their way on goal.
– South Dakota posted the program’s best season record in 2021 at 10-4-4. The 10 wins were the most the Coyotes have had since joining Division I women’s soccer in 2008.
– The Coyotes bring back seven returning starters including five fifth-year seniors in Jordan Centineo, Taylor Cotter, Teresa Fontenot, Tiannah Moore, and Joana Zanin. Centineo was the leading scorer last year with seven goals and 16 points.
