Late Goals Stun Women’s Soccer in Opening Match

Stony Brook, NY – (August 18, 2022) – Stony Brook scored twice in the final 2:03 of the match to steal a 2-1 win from the Fordham Rams on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium.

After a couple of early saves by Maria O’SullivanFordham began to assert control of possession through the first 25 minutes of action.

That control of the match resulted in the Rams taking a 1-0 lead in the 34thth minute, when Maura Murphy netted her first career goal off a rebound on a set piece to the top center of the net.

The 1-0 score held until the final minutes, when Stony Brook struck twice to win the match.

In the 88th minute, Fordham’s Olivia Redden was called for a foul in the box, awarding a penalty kick chance to the Seawolves. Linn Beck stepped to the spot and converted to tie the game at one.

Then in the final seconds, a long punt by Stony Brook goalkeeper Ava King eventually found the foot of Hannah Maracina, who put just enough on a shot to get past Fordham’s Maria O’Sullivan and crossed the line just before the final horn went off for the game-winning tally.

O’Sullivan was credited with five saves in the match for the Rams, while King and Emerson Richmond Burke each had one save for Stony Brook.

The Rams are back in action on Sunday afternoon for a road match at Wagner, starting at 1:00 PM.
