More than 8,000 people had signed an online petition created to oppose the Morneau family’s Thunder Beach plans
A local resident’s proposal to fast-track the redevelopment of his golf course and the construction of a clubhouse and amenities has been withdrawn.
Thunder Beach Alliance, a group of homeowners on West Shore Drive in Tiny Township, says a request asking the township to support a minister’s zoning order (MZO) has been withdrawn.
“Tiny Township is in receipt of correspondence dated Aug. 16, 2022, from Mr. Frank Morneau’s lawyer that they have decided not to proceed with the request for a minister’s zoning order,” read the statement on the group’s website.
Thunder Highlands, the informal five-hole golf course at 360 West Shore Dr., is partially zoned as Greenbelt in the township’s official plan. The family wanted to enlarge the course into a nine-hole championship course and add a clubhouse and other amenities.
Owner Frank Morneau, along with grandson and project manager Connor Houston, made a deputation to Tiny council recently in hopes the municipality would support an MZO to change the zoning designation from its provincial designation.
The request was met with resistance from community members who preceded the Morneau family with their own deputations in opposition to the proposed development.
Since that time, a website for the Thunder Beach Alliance and associated online petition were created.
At the time of the petition’s closure, more than 8,000 individuals had registered their support for the community group.
MidlandToday reached out to both the Morneau family and the Thunder Beach Alliance, but did not receive a response in time for publication.
Prior to the withdrawal of the proposal, the matter was to be discussed at the Aug. 31 regular meetings of Tiny council.
