Clay fire significantly damages mobile home, displaces one

Clay, NY — A fire that could be seen for miles caused significant damage to a mobile home in Clay and displaced the resident who lived there, firefighters said.

At about 5:15 pm, a 911 caller reported seeing a single-wide trailer on fire near the intersection of state route 31 and Weller Canning Road in the town of Clay, according to Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches.

Firefighters could see the smoke from miles away, Clay Fire Chief Michael Redhead said.

When they first arrived, firefighters saw smoke pouring from the front of the trailer, Redhead said. As more of them got there, the fire started consuming the entire structure and spreading to nearby trees, he said.

It took about 20 minutes for the firefighters to get the blaze under control, Redhead said.

No one was inside during the fire, Redhead said. No injuries were reported, he said.

Investigators are determining how the fire started, Redhead said.
