The rivalry between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers dates nearly to the beginning of the NBA, but many of the latter club’s more famous fans have been described as spectators given their apparent equal or greater interest in being seen at the game they are ostensibly there to watch.
That wasn’t the case for actor Rob Lowe, however, who recently revealed that he once risked a role in the film “About Last Night,” to watch the Lakers. He shared that TriStar Pictures had forbidden him to travel to Massachusetts to see Game 6 of the 1985 NBA Finals in Boston. In Hulu’s “Legacy: The True Story of The LA Lakers,” the actor shared how he defied the studio and sneaked off to see his team finish the Celtics on their home floor.
“I hired a seaplane to secretly pick me up to fly to Boston and got in my seats just in time for tipoff,” said Lowe (h/t Landon Buford), and despite rooting for The Bad Guys, you have to respect that level of dedication.
Also, unlike many Hollywood peers, being seen was not something Lowe was hoping for; “Unfortunately, they cut to me in the audience on the broadcast and the studio found out that I was there, and they were not happy.”
