DENTON — The North Texas women’s soccer team won its 2022 season opener 5-1 on Thursday night over Abilene Christian.

The Mean Green scored all five of their goals after ACU took a one goal advantage in the 29th minute.

“It definitely sparked something in us,” said the senior Allie Byrd who scored the match tying goal. “We played a lot more crisp after that and showed off our fitness.”

Byrd, the program’s active career leader in goals scored, netted the match-tying goal — her 19th of her career — just a minute after ACU went up 1-0.

UNT (1-0) then took the lead just three minutes later when fellow senior Jenna Sheely scored.

The Mean Green put the match away in the second half.

They outshot ACU (0-1) 20-1 in the final 45 minutes. Fifth-year senior Olivia Klein scored in the 48th minute off of a beautiful cross from the newcomer Alexis Truitt. Junior Devyn Flannery poked in a goal in the 52nd minute off of a Taylor Tufts assist and then last season’s leading goal scorer senior Madi Drenowatz put the match away in the 76th minute with a header off a corner kick from the newcomer Grace Dennis.

UNT will be back in action on Sunday when they host Oral Roberts at 6 pm CT in Denton. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
