Darryl Strawberry Highlights Successful 2022 YSU Baseball Golf Extravaganza

The Youngstown State baseball program wishes to thank all the participants who took part in the team’s 2022 Golf Extravaganza featuring Darryl Strawberry, which was held on Monday at The Lake Club in Poland, Ohio.

“I am always overwhelmed by the support we receive from the community, our fans and families of the YSU baseball program,” said YSU head coach Dan Bertolini. “It was amazing to have Darryl Strawberry with us this weekend, and it was a fantastic way to kick off our fall season. I just want to thank everyone that came out to the event this year that helped make it so special.”

The event saw a tremendous turnout as 34 foursomes and 136 players took to the course. Golfers enjoyed food trucks, a massage station and various games that were stationed at different holes throughout the course.

Former MLB All-Star and World Series champion Darryl Strawberry highlighted the event, speaking at an exclusive dinner on Sunday evening and taking part in the golf outing on Monday. Strawberry, who played for four different teams during his 17-year career, was an eight-time MLB All-Star and four-time World Series champion. He helped lead the New York Mets to a World Series championship in 1986 and the New York Yankees to three titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999. Strawberry was named the 1983 National League Rookie of the Year after batting .257 with 26 home runs, seven triples and 74 RBIs. He was selected to eight consecutive All-Star games from 1984 to 1991, starting each of the first five.

Cleveland media personality Bruce Drennan was also in attendance. Drennan was the host of the daily afternoon sports talk show “Drennan Live” on the regional sports network Bally Sports Great Lakes. He is also a former MLB and NBA announcer and sports radio personality.

YSU players, coaches and staff members were able to connect with many familiar faces on a beautiful day in Northeast Ohio with temperatures in the mid-70s. The program’s long-standing support was on full display once again as the field of golfers included former players and coaches as well as fans and supporters.

The YSU baseball program would like to thank the following sponsors for their support of the event.

  • Home Run Sponsors: The Muransky Companies, Joe Rich
  • Triple Sponsors: Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods, TriVista
  • Double Sponsors: Johnson Controls, Bob Choppa, Congressman Bill Johnson, Window World
