The Mets are dipping into their talented prospect pool by calling up No. 2 prospect Brett Baty, a source told MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo on Tuesday. The club has not confirmed the move.
The 22-year-old third baseman, who is expected to be active on Wednesday, was recently promoted to Triple-A Syracuse and has had a strong start there, slashing .364/.462/.364 in six games at that level. He flashed his pop in Double-A Binghamton with 19 homers in 89 games before the promotion.
With Eduardo Escobar battling through some side tightness — he was scratched from Tuesday’s starting lineup — and utility infielder Luis Guillorme on the shelf for multiple weeks, the Mets needed depth in the infield. With Baty getting the call, it appears more likely that Escobar will require time on the injured list, which is fast becoming crowded for the Mets after Carlos Carrasco was also sidelined on Tuesday with a left oblique strain.
Baty was the club’s first-round Draft pick in 2019 and was taken with the No. 12 overall pick. He has a smooth left-handed swing and power potential, and his defense has been improving at third base. After moving up to Triple-A, Baty spoke with MLB.com about the expectations of being one step away from the Majors.
“It could happen at any time, [and] they’re making a playoff push, which is always fun to watch up there,” Baty said. “If [getting called up] does happen, then I would go up there and do the same thing I’m doing down here: go through my daily work and try to be the best baseball player I can be for the team, and score runs, and win ballgames.”
Baty will now get that opportunity with a Mets team trying to stave off the Braves in the chase for the NL East title.
