The Death Valley Girls are bringing some bristling guitar-driven rock to Mobile’s Alabama Music Box on Tuesday, but that’s not all – New Orleans artist Boyfriend will be in town to add a little something extra to the party.
The Death Valley Girls are a noteworthy act for a variety of reasons, including the fact that the band was co-founded by Patty Shemel of Hole. The group once released a music video that consists entirely of Iggy Pop slowly eating a hamburger, which is pretty awesome, and more recently its song “When I’m Free” was remixed by Peaches.
Meanwhile: Boyfriend, whose music has mixed elements of rock, pop, rap and cabaret, has had a loyal following in Mobile for years, thanks in part to appearances at the SouthSounds music festival. She’s on the verge of releasing her first full album, “Sugar & Spice,” which includes collaborations with Big Freedia, Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot, TikTok star Baily Flores, and the Death Valley Girls, among others.
According to representatives, she’ll be at the Alabama Music Box on Tuesday to sit in with the Death Valley Girls and get some footage to be used in a video for the song they do on “Sugar & Spice.” She’ll also be celebrating her birthday, so it should be a festive occasion.
“Sugar & Spice” will be released on Sept. 9. Boyfriend starts a tour Oct. 1 that will bring her back to the Alabama Music Box on Oct. 7.
Tuesday night’s Death Valley Girls show starts at 9 pm at 12 S. Conception St. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show; for more information, visit alabamamusicbox.com.
