David Campbell, Colin Erskine and Frank Smith
PORT Glasgow Golf Club hosted this year’s Inverclyde Golf Veteran Champion of Champions event.
The event featured the 2021 veteran champions of Gourock Golf Club (Colin Erskine), Port Glasgow Golf Club (David Campbell) and Whinhill Golf Club (Frank Smith). The veteran champion of Greenock Golf Club was unable to participate.
The title is decided by an 18-hole strokeplay round, with the best nett score being declared the winner.
The match was played in relatively calm conditions with the blistering heat not making scoring easy on a course in terrific conditions.
The scoring was of a very high standard with only two shots separating all three players. Frank Smith (Whinhill) finished third with a nett score of 71 in a tale of two nines with a slow start on the front nine followed up with an excellent back nine of 29.5 nett.
Home player David Campbell finished second on a nett score of 70 with a lost ball at the last hole an unfortunate way to end after playing some solid golf.
The title was claimed by Colin Erskine of Gourock, his third win in this event and his fifth champion of champions title in total, with a solid par at the last for a fine nett score of 69 (five over par scratch score) making his trip down from Aberdeen worthwhile.
The match was played in an excellent sporting manner and mutual respect between the competitors was evident. All champions were tremendous ambassadors for their golf clubs.
Inverclyde Golf thanks Steven McLeod and all at Port Glasgow Golf Club for hosting the event and their hospitality.
