Shane Lemieux injury exposes Giants’ glaring depth issues

New York Giants guard Shane Lemieux came up limping during the team’s first offensive series on Thursday night. And while he remained in the game initially, he headed to the locker-room once the drive concluded.

When Lemieux finally emerged, he did so in a walking boot. The Giants ruled him out due to a toe injury.

“I’m going to meet with Ronnie (Barnes) and those guys on the way back,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters. “Hope (it’s) not (a long-term issue).”

As he joined Bob Papa and Carl Banks in the NBC4 booth, general manager Joe Schoen also lamented the injuries. He had hoped to get through the preseason opener healthy given the team’s lack of depth along the offensive line.

Already this summer, the Giants have lost rookie tackle Marcus McKethan to a torn ACL and terminated the contract of swing tackle Matt Gono, who is dealing with a neck injury that some worry may be career-threatening. Meanwhile, center Nick Gates (leg) and tackle Matt Peart (knee) remain on PUP and it’s anyone’s guess when they return.

Compounding matters, reserve offensive lineman Jamil Douglas also suffered an injury on Thursday night and did not return.

With little available cap space, the Giants are already hemorrhaging. They cannot afford to lose Lemieux for an extended period of time and are now left holding their breath — an all too familiar feeling.
