Sports for Kids Timmins raises funds for children ages 4 to 18 from low-income families to participate in organized sports in our community.
Sports for Kids believes that because sport, recreation and physical activity provide essential social, educational and health benefits, they must be accessible to all kids, and that no child/youth should be denied the tremendous associated benefits.
However, a lack of facilities, cutback of afterschool programs and rising costs of registration and equipment have caused childhood inactivity to increase.
That is why the organization is dedicated to creating conditions that enable and support children and youth to participate and engage in recreational opportunities.
The organization runs on donations from businesses and individuals each year. With a budgeted voucher system of up to $350 per child per year, Sports for Kids pays for registration fees and equipment for children, making support from the community critical.
“Sports for Kids operates so that all children, no matter what their economic situation is, can play sports to keep active, healthy and happy,” said Colleen Landers, President of Sports for Kids Timmins.
Wed Aug. 29 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Sports for Kids is hosting its annual ‘Welcome to Sports Night’ at the Sportsplex arena.
Parents/guardians and children are welcome to attend the free event, where children can play and try sports at 20 different booths, see them demonstrated and register for fall sessions. It is a great opportunity for interested children to try their hand before registering for a sport while also showcasing the recreational activities available here in Timmins and the partnerships built between Sports for Kids and other local sports organisations.
During the event, the Sports for Kids office will be open to accept applications for funding for the fall.
“The one-stop shop event is an effort to give back to the organizations who partner with us,” said Landers.
The event will include Kinz & Klomp with live music and interviews, dignitaries including MP Charlie Angus, MPP George Pirie and acting Mayor Kristine Murray. There will also be draws and the first 200 children will receive a free goodie bag from sponsors.
You can help make a difference for children in Timmins who need help accessing sports and recreational opportunities by donating via e-transfer to [email protected]. Donations are eligible for charitable tax receipts.
