Sports switching to solar | Brimbank & North West

By Holly McGuinness

Brimbank’s sports clubs are looking to a more sustainable future as they make the switch to solar as part of Brimbank council’s new solar sports programme.

St Albans Saints soccer club is one of the first clubs to have the Solar panels installed and club president Ilijah Drgicevic has worked with council on a number of projects in the past with this being their latest since Covid.

“Moving into the future it keeps us more sustainable, it’s a great program for the future of our kids”

The initiative will reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Brimbank as part of the council’s Climate Emergency Plan to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Brimbank Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said it’s one step closer to achieving a 100 per cent renewable municipality,

“This project will help local sports clubs using these facilities save money on their energy bills. So it’s not only great for the environment, but it is also investing in the health and well-being of our community,” Mayor Nguyen said,

“By taking action like installing solar across our community, we can help make Brimbank’s environment cleaner, greener, cooler and healthier for generations to come.”

So far recipients of the solar panels include Dempster Park football cricket ground, Kevin Flint Memorial, Selwyn Reserve cricket and soccer ground, and at Churchill Reserve. Council will continue to roll out this program to eligible sport facilities this financial year.
