Maggie Healy is “all in” with the Scotia-Glenville girls’ soccer team this fall.
Healy takes over from Lise Williams, who finished a 21-year career as varsity head coach after last season. Williams, a 1989 Scotia-Glenville graduate who remains a guidance counselor at the high school, finished with a career record of 297-76-23.
Healy, who was the head coach of the girls’ modified team last fall, said she thought it was an exciting opportunity when she first learned that Williams would be retiring.
“But I do have kids, so I wanted to make sure I could commit to both them and to Scotia-Glenville if I did it,” said Healy, who is a health and sports physiology teacher at the high school, as well as a personal trainer. “I met with [Scotai-Glenville athletic director] Jamian [Rockhill], talked out things and then said, ‘OK, let’s do it.’ “
Healy said she has played and coached soccer for years, and is excited to lead the Tartans.
“I started my coaching career assisting Craig Gilbert at Tamarac,” Healy said of Section II’s all-time winningest coach, with 478 victories, 12 sectional titles and one state title. “He was an amazing mentor. The way he coached really helped me learn more, in that there’s a reason for everything we do, and I tend to coach the same way.
Healy also coached the Galway varsity girls’ soccer team for several years.
Healy said she is explaining “why” as part of the summer workout program she has given the prospective players.
“It’s not just ‘do this, do that,'” she said, “but do this because this is how it’s going to help you.”
Scotia-Glenville is scheduled to begin its regular season on Sept. 2 at Glens Falls.
