For everyone clamoring for the Detroit Tigers to add more offense, well, you got your wish … at least in a few years.
First-year president of baseball operations Scott Harris leaned hard on position players with his first three picks in the 2023 MLB draft. At No. 3 overall, Harris bypassed the top college bat (Florida’s Wyatt Langford) in favor of the top high school bat, Max Clark of Franklin, Indiana. Then, with the Tigers’ competitive balance round pick — No. 37 overall — Harris went with high school shortstop Kevin McGonigle, from just outside of Philadelphia. Finally, in the second round at No. 45 overall, Harris turned to the college ranks, taking Nebraska second baseman Max Anderson.
