From a Fresh Prince to Marcel Marcel

The 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville ended Thursday. Generational talent Connor Bedard was selected first overall in an opening round dominated by offensive prospects.

In fact, 224 picks were made in Bridgestone Arena’s second NHL Draft. That’s 224 names. Some are awfully difficult for Americans to pronounce, and others are eerily familiar. Here are some of our favorites.

Marcel Marcel

Team: Chicago Blackhawks

Drafted: fifth round, no. 131

A name even Carey Price can’t forget.

Team: San Jose Sharks

Drafted: first round, no. 4

No, not that Will Smith. This one’s much younger and hails from Massachusetts. Although he did make his way on stage to shake hands and accept his Sharks jersey The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song playing — and later rapped to the chorus of the show’s theme song on national TV — it’s unlikely he has much of a career in Hollywood ahead of him.

Felix Unger Sörum

Team: Carolina Hurricanes

Drafted: second round, no. 62

No relation to the Felix Unger from The Odd Couple.

Danil But

Team: Arizona Coyotes

Drafted: first round, no. 12

But is pronounced “boot” here. Grow up.

Matthew Mania

Team: LA Kings

Drafted: fifth round, no. 150

Does this make the Kings Matthew Maniacs?

Florian Xhekaj

Team: Montreal Canadiens

Drafted: fifth round, no. 101

Xhekaj sounds different in different languages, but it’s pronounced “heck-age” in English. Florian is not to be confused with Arber, his older brother who also plays for the Canadiens.

Dennis Good Boggs

Team: NY Islanders

Drafted: seventh round, no. 209

“Good Bogg and good night!” is what the Islanders may have said after taking Good Bogg with their last pick of the draft.
