The Mets continued their four-game series against the Brewers with a 7-2 win powered by David Peterson’s strong start and two Brandon Nimmo home runs.

Here are the takeaways…

1. David Peterson took the ball for the Mets for the first time in the majors since May 15. After the left-hander looked to find his control following two walks, Peterson spun a double-play ball to escape a bases-loaded jam to keep the Brewers off of the board in the first. Peterson also worked around a double from Joey Weimer as the Brewers left three men on base in the first two frames.

In the fourth, Peterson’s escapes continued with another double-play ball to shortstop after the first two runners reached for Milwaukee. One batter later, Peterson got Brian Anderson to swing through a back-foot slider to end the inning.

Peterson’s adjustments on his breaking ball evolved positively in the middle innings of his start, and began to miss more bats in the fourth and fifth innings.

The left-hander finished the night with 110 pitches, which set a new career-high. In his best start of the season, Peterson tossed six innings of shutout ball with five hits and three walks allowed in addition to five strikeouts. Francisco Lindor turned in a dazzling play with a jump throw from deep in the hole at shortstop to retire Luis Urias and close the line on Peterson.

2. Julio Teheran got the start for the Brewers. The right-hander entered Tuesday with a 1.53 ERA in his first season back in the big leagues since 2021 after two All-Star appearances earlier in his career. Through three innings, Teheran and Peterson matched zeroes in what turned into an early pitcher’s duel.

3. Later in the fourth, Brandon Nimmo smacked a cutter from Teheran over the right field wall for his ninth home run of the season and the game’s first run. Two batters later, Lindor delivered a solo shot to left-center field for his 16th home run of the season and the 200th homer of his career.

In his second straight at-bat, Nimmo also went opposite field for a two-run homer and his second in the ballgame. The multi-homer game marked the fourth of the outfielder’s career and did so for the first time since 2021.

4. New York added insurance in the sixth with three more runs. After a stolen base, Tommy Pham snuck a double just fair into the left field corner to score Pete Alonso. Daniel Vogelbach followed with the third opposite field home run of the night for a left-handed hitter.

5. Milwaukee did break up the shutout in the eighth when Anderson singled in two runs against Jeff Brigham in the eighth inning. Dominic Leone got the final four outs, including striking out the side in the ninth, to secure the 7-2 win.

The Mets scored all seven of their runs between the third and fifth innings to even the four-game series at one game a piece.
