Jak and Daxter 1 now playable on PC without emulation

Jack and Daxter 1

The original Jack and Daxter games were a huge success back in the early 2000s. Created by Naughty Dog Jack and Daxter was a 3D platformer released on Playstation 2.

Since then the game has been remastered in the Jak and Daxter Collection for the PS3 and Playstation Vita in 2013 and was a PS2 classic port on the PS4 in 2017 and until now, the game has only been playable on PC via emulation

The people at Opengoal reverse engineered the classic game for PC. You see, back during the golden era of the PS2, Naughty Dog used their own custom game development engine and programming language called “Goal.”

This meant that if you were to look at the code that makes up the video game, it would look like some kind of confusing dead language from an ancient civilization, as opposed to more common and popular languages at the time.

Now after many years the people at OpenGoal have been able to decompile that language and then reverse engineer it into something readable and in doing so, have been able to port the game to PC.

Currently Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy it is about 80% complete. This means you can play the entire game from start to finish with 100% completion relatively easily, however, there are some “polish” issues with texture and object pop-in that Opengoal are still working on.

On top of being able to play the game Opengoal gives access to improved graphics, resolutions, and framerates as well as a platform to mod the game as well making their unofficial port of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy the best possible version of the game to date.

Opengoal also has plans to port over James II and James X as well, but there is no timeframe for that yet as they’re still decompiling the original.

If you’re interested in trying this out for yourself, or interested in the decompiling process Opengoal has plenty of information on their website about how this was made possible.
