Mets LHP David Peterson is set to start for New York in Tuesday’s 7:10 pm game against the Milwaukee Brewers on SNY, according to The Post’s Mike Puma and MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.
Initially, during Sunday’s pregame media availability, Mets manager Buck Showalter did not commit to Peterson over LHP Joey Lucchesi.
“I haven’t heard that that’s been committed to, but he’s a candidate,” Showalter said of Peterson. “I can’t, you know — he’s a candidate for Tuesday.”
Peterson, 27, is 1-6 with an 8.08 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 39 IP over eight starts for the Mets this season.
He last pitched for New York May 16, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking two in five innings of a 10-3 loss at the Washington Nationals.
New York subsequently optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.
In seven Triple-A starts this season, Peterson is 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 37 IP.
“I leave that in (pitching coach) Jeremy (Hefner) and (general manager) Billy (Eppler) and our people down in minor leagues,” Showalter said. “I’ve got my hands full here. But I know what he wasn’t doing here that he needed to get better at, and I hope he has, if and when he comes back.”
“The big thing is command,” Showalter added of what Peterson needed to work on.
After Sunday’s rubber match at the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets return to Citi Field for a seven-game homestand with a pair of series against the Brewers (four) and San Francisco Giants (three).
