Albert Pujols joins MLB as special assistant, MLB Network analyst

One of the greatest sluggers of his generation will soon be discussing his craft – and the game in general – as an on-air analyst for MLB Network.

Three-time National League MVP Albert Pujols was named Monday as a special assistant to MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, advising him on “a range of topics, including player relations and issues regarding his home country, the Dominican Republic,” according to a news release .

“Beyond his long list of accomplishments on the field, Albert is a highly respected figure who represents the game extraordinarily well. He cares greatly about making a difference in our communities,” Manfred said in a statement.

In addition to those duties, Pujols, 43, will also make appearances on MLB Network, with his debut set for Tuesday morning on the show, “MLB Central.”

Pujols retired at the end of last season, concluding a no-doubt Hall of Fame career with 703 home runs (fourth on the all-time list), 11 All-Star appearances, three NL MVP awards and two World Series titles among his many accomplishments over 22 MLB seasons.

“I couldn’t be more excited for this next chapter of my career,” Pujols said. “Commissioner Manfred and I share the same passion for growing the game in the Dominican Republic and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to join the MLB Network family. I’ve been a huge fan since the very beginning and can’t wait to get started.”

In addition to joining “MLB Central” on Tuesday, Pujols will also appear Wednesday on “MLB Tonight” and will be part of the network’s coverage of the Cubs–Cardinals series in London on June 23.
