Registration opens June 11 for Charlevoix’s junior golf program

CHARLEVOIX — Official registration for this summer’s Junior Golf instructional program is set for Sunday, June 11 at the Charlevoix Golf Club, municipal course.

Area youngsters must be at least 8 years of age and no older than 16. Registration requires a parent or guardian to be present to provide a signature on the waiver of liability form. Juniors 11-16 years of age are asked to register at 4:45 pm and those 8-10 years old are signing up at 5:30 pm

There is a charge of $60 that pays for all scheduled lessons and play days. Juniors should bring a putter, as the first lesson will precede registration. Loaner clubs will also be available.

This is the 29th year that the Charlevoix County Junior Golf Association has offered the program to area youth. Sessions teach golf fundamentals, meet 2-3 times weekly and runs through July 16.

The teaching staff includes: Marty Joy, Joan Waha, Tom Rex, Doug Drenth, Stuart Goldsblatt and Maureen Whitehead. The emphasis will be on learning golf rules and procedures, proper fundamentals and techniques and course etiquette.

Lessons rotate and will be held at each of the following courses: Belvedere Club, Charlevoix Golf Club (municipal) and the Charlevoix Country Club. In addition, there will be a Sunday evening program for advanced players, scheduled at 6 pm at the Belvedere Course. This program introduces a competitive match play format for those wishing to compete and planning to eventually try out for the high school golf team.

Executive director Dean Davenport also reminded parents that “We will again have scholarships available based on need for families where the fee may be a hardship with details available at registration. We also will again have loaner clubs available. We want every youngster to have this golfing and educational opportunity.”

Additional adult volunteers are needed to work in the mentoring program. Any new mentors should attend the registration session or call Davenport at (231) 349-0534. Free golf is earned by mentors who work in the program.

Those unable to register on June 11 can still register during the first week of sessions. Additional information can be obtained by calling Doug Drenth at (231) 350-9209 or Dean Davenport at (231) 349-0534.
