Mets takeaways from Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Phillies, including Mark Canha’s four-RBI night

New York Mets left fielder Mark Canha (19) reacts after hitting a two-run home run against the Philadelphia Phillies during the third inning at Citi Field.

The Mets have now won seven consecutive games at Citi Field after beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1, on Wednesday night.

Here are the takeaways…

– Following Kodai Senga‘s exceptional start on Tuesday night, Carlos Carrasco threw a great game himself, his second consecutive quality start. Carrasco went six innings and gave up one earned run on six hits with a walk while striking out four.

It was nearly identical to his last outing in Chicago against the Cubs where he gave up one earned run on five hits, two walks while also striking out four over 6.2 innings. Just like his last start, the only run Carrasco allowed came via a solo home run, this one by the No. 9 hitter, Edmundo Sosain the third inning.

– Long balls continue to plague Carrasco who has served up six home runs in 31.1 innings this season, including one in each of his last three starts, but he lowered his ERA to 5.74 and threw just 82 pitches (52 strikes).

– Sosa’s home run broke a scoreless tie, which has normally spelled trouble for the Mets this season as they entered the night with an 11-24 record when the opposition scores first. However, in the next half-inning Mark Canha hit a two-run shot – the team’s first hit off Aaron Nola – to give New York the lead.

In the fourth inning, Canha struck again. First, Pete Alonso hit a single before Nola walked Brett Baty and Daniel Vogelbachstriking out Starling Marte in between. Still, with the bases loaded and two outs, Canha stroked a two-run single to drive in his third and fourth runs of the night out of the eight hole.

– Given a lead, Carrasco ended his night by getting out of trouble in the sixth inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, JT Realmuto represented the game-tying run at the plate, but Carrasco got him to roll over one to third base and end the inning.

Brooks Raley pitched the seventh inning and found similar trouble after giving up two singles, but just like Carrasco, Raley got the right-handed hitter Trea Turner to ground out to Baty who made the long throw from third base to nab the speedy shortstop.

Raley struck out Bryce Harper to start the eighth before giving way to Adam Ottavino who got the next two outs of the inning. Still 4-1 going into the ninth, David Robertson came on for the save and had to work out of a jam, as well. After giving up a single and hitting a batter, Robertson buckled down to strike out the next two hitters and lock down the Mets’ win.
