Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is diversifying his investments, according to a new article by the Boston Globe’s Michael Silverman. Per Silverman, Tatum is now part-owner of a Major League Pickleball team, the Los Angeles Mad Drops, in the popular tennis-like sport that features a soft shot called a “dink”.
The St. Louis native joined chess master Magnus Carlsen, fellow NBAer Zach LaVine and others as investors in the Mad Drops as the sport’s popularity has begun to take off in recent months. Playing in the Professional Pickleball Association and the Association of Pickleball Professionals — the two leagues in which the sport is currently played professionally — singles and doubles tourneys are the format in which the competition takes place.
Among the fastest-growing sports worldwide, the interest and investment from such high-profile investors and owners like Tatum, Carlsen, and even Los Angeles Lakers star (and Celtics nemesis) LeBron James has helped fuel that popularity.
