Diamondbacks’ offense explodes early vs. Rockies

DENVER — Geraldo Perdomo’s three-run home run capped a six-run second inning as the Diamondbacks jumped to a big lead against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday at Coors Field.

The Diamondbacks sent 10 batters to the plate in the second against Rockies right-hander Noah Davis. The rally started for the Diamondbacks when Pavin Smith worked a one-out walk. Jose Herrera also walked a few batters later, forcing home the inning’s first run.

After Josh Rojas shot an opposite-field single to right to drive home two, Perdomo unloaded on a 1-0 change-up from Davis, sending it into the seats in right.

Left-hander Tommy Henry, meanwhile, had given up just one run through three innings, with one walk and two strikeouts.

DENVER — Sharing the same road city this weekend, the Diamondbacks are doing what they can to show their support for the Phoenix Suns, who are playing the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he invited Suns coach Monty Williams to the Diamondbacks-Rockies game on Friday night. Williams declined.

“He said that he’s in his bunker and busy,” Lovullo said. “I totally respect that. I thought maybe it would be a nice break for him to get away.”

Before Saturday’s game, Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly, who went to high school in Scottsdale, and Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland, a native of Colorado, were sporting their local jerseys for a photo op on the field.

Kelly was wearing a Kevin Durant jersey, Freeland a Nikola Jokic jersey.

The Durant jersey was an authentic, a spare the Diamondbacks borrowed from the Suns.

Lovullo was wearing the same jersey when he met with reporters prior to Saturday night’s game.

“We’re going to hand it around the clubhouse,” Lovullo said. “We’re being as supportive as we possibly can. The irony of it is we’re in the same town and we know they’re close by and we’re trying to send them our energy today.”

Right-hander Zach Davies is throwing from out to 120 feet, manager Torey Lovullo said, and is expected to throw a bullpen session next week. It would be his first time throwing off the mound since suffering a left oblique strain on April 8.

Catcher Carson Kelly, who is out with a right forearm fracture, has not been able to start swinging a bat after visiting with a team doctor earlier in the week. He is scheduled to get another round of X-rays on Monday, Lovullo said.

“There’s going to be some range of motion and some strengthening on that wrist,” Lovullo said. “He’s doing all other baseball activities that he can minus the wrist. He’s catching. He’s able to condition and do some one-arm drills with the bat. Hopefully we shorten that gap as to when he returns with what he’s doing right now.”

Outfielder Kyle Lewis is taking a soft toss in the cage, Lovullo said.

“He’s just a little tired,” Lovullo said. “He’s missed some baseball time. He’s got to get his legs back under him. He’s doing OK.”

Lewis last played on April 7. He is on the injured due to an undisclosed illness.

What to know about the Colorado Rockies

The Rockies are off to a miserable 8-18 start, the sort of season most expected from a team that made relatively few changes in the winter following a 68-94 season in 2022. The Rockies have the fourth-worst offense in the league, averaging just 3.77 runs per game. Their pitching staff has a 5.09 ERA, last in the league. RF Kris Bryant, who was banged up for much of last year, has a .312/.379/.452 line with three homers. DH Charlie Blackmon has also posted solid numbers, with a .276/.394/.414 line. Most everyone else is struggling at the plate, including SS Ezequiel Tovar, a highly regarded young player who is hitting just .192 with 27 strikeouts in 78 at-bats. 2B/3B Ryan McMahon has 35 strikeouts in 88 at-bats. LHP Austin Gomber has a 9.28 ERA through five starts. RHP Jose Urena had a 9.82 ERA in his five starts and was designated for assignment this week. The Rockies got RHP Daniel Bard back from the injured in recent days. He has thrown 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run since his return.
