SUNDAY’S LOSS: Tigers lost in 10 innings despite pitching gem from Eduardo Rodriguez
Game notes: It’s the Tigers’ first visit to Milwaukee since 2021, and just the franchise’s 17th game in Wisconsin since the Brew Crew jumped to the National League in 1998. They’re 4-6 all-time at the Brewers’ “new” stadium, which opened in 2001, by the way, after splitting the series there in 2020 and 2021.
While we’re on the topic of blasts from the past, the Brewers’ offense is led by shortstop Willy Adames, who’s in his sixth big-league season despite not turning 28 until September. Adames, of course, was a Tigers farmhand back in the day; he was shipped to Tampa Bay as an 18-year-old in the July 2014 deal that brought left-hander David Price to the Tigers for parts of two seasons. (Price, of course, was shipped to Toronto at the 2015 deadline for a package that included Matthew Boyd, today’s starter.) This season, Adames is slashing .272/.371/.469 thanks to four homers and four doubles in 93 plate appearances appearances.
There’s a couple of other Michigan connections on the Milwaukee roster, as well. Rookie Joey Wiemer, who went 2-for-3 on Sunday, is a 2018 grad of Temperance Bedford; he’s only hitting .219 on the year, but he posted an .888 OPS in Triple-A last season. The Brewers also have 29-year-old Mike Brosseau, who played his college ball for Oakland U.; the right-handed hitter has two homers and two doubles as part of his seven hits this season in limited action.
After the series opener, the Tigers have two more games in the Non-Mitten State, with Spencer Turnbull taking the mound Tuesday night and Michael Lorenzen going in the series finale on Wednesday afternoon. That’ll be followed by a return him and a reunion with the Orioles for a four-game set at Comerica Park from Thursday-Sunday.
