MLB The Show 23 Release Date, Cover Athlete And Pre-Order

The first steps towards the complete reveal and release of MLB The Show 23 have been taken. On Monday, Sony San Diego Studios announced the cover athlete, release date and some of the pre-order information for the game.

In case you missed it, Miami Marlins up-and-comer Jazz Chisolm was selected as the cover athlete. The release date for this year’s game will be March 28 and fans can begin pre-ordering the title on February 6.

The game will again be available on the Xbox family of consoles (Xbox One, One X and One S) and the Nintendo Switch, in addition to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The official MLB The Show Twitter account tweeted this post which contains images of the cover art for the three console families.

This post all but confirms the series will not make its PC debut. We haven’t seen the full list of features coming to this year’s game, but there was plenty of reaction to the underwhelming cover athlete choice.

The announcement had its supporters and detractors.

Chisolm has the swag that publishers would like when looking for a cover athlete for a sports game in 2023, but he has yet to produce the sort of on-field resume that is usually associated with a guy or girl getting this honor.

Chisolm has been a major leaguer for three seasons. Chisolm turns 26 on Wednesday, and he is a lifetime 243-hitter. Chisolm has never hit more than 18 homers, although he did steal 23 bases in 2021. Perhaps the 2023 season will be a breakout year for Chisolm after he played in just 60 games in 2022.

PRE-ORDER OPTIONS: What We Know So Far

There will be additional pre-order options available for the collector’s edition, which we’ll learn about on Wednesday, but the ones for the standard edition offer 5 Show packs and 10K stubs to those who pay in advance for MLB The Show.

Who Will Be On the Cover of the Collector’s Edition?

There are some rumors this is finally the year when The Show gets New York Yankees great and former part-owner and CEO of the Marlins franchise, Derek Jeter. While Jeter is technically not a part of the Marlins’ organization anymore, you have to wonder if there is some sort of package deal with the Marlins organization.

Perhaps we’ll see more current/past connections with the cover athletes in the series in the future. Stay tuned as more information on the game becomes available.
