Red Sox DFA Franklin German after Matt Barnes trade originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The Boston Red Sox followed up their DFA of reliever Matt Barnes with another surprising roster move.

Barnes was traded to the Miami Marlins for left-handed reliever Richard Bleier on Monday. To make room on the roster for Bleier, right-hander Franklin German was designated for assignment.

German, 25, was originally acquired from the New York Yankees in the 2021 trade that also brought reliever Adam Ottavino to Boston. He was named the organization’s 2022 Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year after posting a 2.72 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP in 43 appearances between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester.

His brief stint in the big leagues was a different story. German was promoted to the majors in late September and allowed four runs without recording a run in his MLB debut. He ended up with eight earned runs in eight innings of work through five appearances.

German was SoxProspects.com’s No. 22 ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization.
