There are only two games this Sunday, as the league gears up for the All-Star break. Boston is far and away the best team in the NHL at the mid-way point, but the Bruins have looked more mortal lately. They will try to avoid losing three straight games when they travel to take on the Carolina Hurricanes, who are first in the Metropolitan division. Carolina is coming into this game on a four-game winning streak. Boston may be the better team, but there’s a reason the Hurricanes are favored at home tonight.
The Bruins are coming off back-to-back losses against the Lightning and Panthers. Boston’s most recent loss was a 4-3 overtime defeat to the Panthers. Everything looked like it was going according to plan for Boston. The Bruins were up 3-2 until Aleksander Barkov got the equalizer with just three seconds left in regulation. Goalie Alex Lyon kept Florida in the game with 38 saves. Sam Reinhart made sure not to waste the effort, getting an assist from Barkov to net the game-winner in overtime to stun Boston.

Carolina on the other hand has won back-to-back games in overtime, most recently beating San Jose 5-4. The Sharks were up 4-2, but Carolina came roaring back with huge help from Martin Necas.
He scored with just 12 seconds in regulation to tie the game. If that wasn’t enough, Necas got the game-winner less than one minute into the extra period. Maybe we won’t see another overtime thriller tonight, but you can almost guarantee a close game from these division leaders.
