The 2023 Caribbean Series will be played from February 2-10 in Venezuela, with eight teams seeking to inherit the throne vacated by the Barranquilla Caimanes, champions in the 2022 edition in the Dominican Republic.
Venezuela will host the competition in two venues, at the La Rinconada stadium in Caracas and the Forum stadium in La Guaira. The representatives of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Panama, Curacao and the host will play against every other team and the best four will face each other in a semi-final, the first against the fourth and the second against the third, to fight for the championship on February 10.
In 64 editions of the Caribbean Series the most dominant country is the Dominican Republic and the most successful team is Tigres del Licey with 10 championships and this year they will be the representative of their country looking to increase their dominance in baseball in the area.
Tigres del Licey are also one of the Dominican Republic’s powerhouses with 22 championships, although their last Caribbean Series was won in 2008.
Dominican Republic dominates the Caribbean Series
The Dominican Republic’s teams are the most successful teams in the history of the Caribbean Series, giving the country a total of 20 triumphs, in addition to the 10 of the Tigres del Licey, the next highest-ranked team in terms of titles is Aguilas Cibaenas with six, and Leones del Escogido are also in the Top 5 with four championships.
After the Dominicans, there are two teams from Puerto Rico among the competition’s powerhouses, Criollos de Caguas and Cangrejos de Santurce with five each. In addition, the Indios de Mayaguez have two, while the Senadores de San Juan, Vaqueros de Bayamon, Lobos de Arecibo and Leones de Ponce have one, for a total of 14 titles for the Puerto Ricans.
The rest have a maximum of two championships and Mexico is the third country with the most titles with nine, having four teams with two titles: Tomateros de Culiacan, Yaquis de Obregon, Naranjeros de Hermosillo and Venados de Mazatlan. The other championship came from Aguilas de Mexicali.
The other teams that also have two Caribbean Series trophies are: Leones de Caracas, Navegantes de Magallanes, Aguilas del Zulia (Venezuela); and Alacranes del Almendares, Tigres del Marinao and Elefantes de Cienfuegos (Cuba).
