Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Spring League resumes with competitive opening weekend

The 2023 Spring League officially kicked off with the weather on both Saturday and Sunday being fairly good for the time of year.

The format will be six of your best scores out of the eight weeks, weather permitting. So, if you miss a weekend or didn’t play well there are still plenty of chances to climb the leaderboard.

All three divisions were won on a count back, with Bernard Rooney taking first place in Division 1. Bernard, having grown up on the golf course, probably knows it better than anyone.

And he clearly showed it with birdies on the 2nd, 9th and 13th on his way to 28pts, which was enough to beat John Clarke on the count back.

Division Two probably the most competitive with seven players within one shot of each other. Michael McCartan came out on top on this occasion with a score of 27pts, beating club vice-captain Fergal Brady on the count back.

Division 3 turned out to be the highest scoring with Stephen McGarvey taking home first place with a score of 30pts. Stephen played on Saturday afternoon and with the clubhouse in sight the heavens opened.

Not only was it raining, but it was bitterly cold too. Yet this didn’t stop Stephen finishing his round with back-to-back pars to just pip Seamus Martin to first place.

Meanwhile, the scoring on the first weekend in 2023 was exceptional. Division 1 was won by Philip Hughes with a great score of 31pts. Barry Maguire won division 2 with a score of 30pts and Division 3 was won by the one and only Eddie Rouiller with a brilliant score of 32pts.

Spring League Weekend 14th/15th January: Division 1 – Bernard Rooney PH (6) – 28pts, Division 2 – Michael McCartan PH (14) – 27pts, Division 3 – Stephen McGarvey PH (20) – 30pts.

Weekend Stableford 13-hole Weekend 7th/8th January: Division 1 – Philip Hughes 31pts, Division 2 – Barry Maguire 30pts, Division 3 – Eddie Roullier 32pts.
