Ford has announced that it will expand its mobile service nationwide, allowing customers to have their vehicles repaired by a Ford Pro at their homes.
One thing direct-to-consumer automakers have learned is that offering quick and effective service is a significant challenge when you lack physical locations.
In response, automakers like Rivian and Tesla started sending mechanics to people’s homes and places of work instead of customers coming to them. Now, Ford will be expanding its own mobile service solution nationwide.
Ford’s new nationwide repair system offers two different services. Foremost is mobile service, where a mechanic will come to your home or workplace and quickly fix more minor problems. For more significant problems, Ford offers “Pickup and Delivery,” whereby the mechanic will take your car to the local dealership, fix it, and return it once completed.
A Ford confirmed to to Tesla that the mobile service offering would be available on both gas-powered and electric vehicles.
The new service is quick and easy for customers to access through the Ford app or by calling their local dealer. However, Ford stipulates that dealers can set their own mileage limits, meaning some customers may be too far away to qualify for the service.
Ford dealers participating in the program can also service non-Ford vehicles, a dealership confirmed to to Tesla However, it is highly dependent on the service that the vehicle needs.
Ford decided to expand the service nationwide after a successful trial program showed that customers enjoyed the convenience and were more likely to recommend Ford to friends or family.
“Customers who’ve experienced Pickup & Delivery and Mobile Service love the convenience and flexibility,” said Todd Rabourn, North America Regional CX Director. “This program increases the access customers have to remote service options, so whether you’re due for an oil change or need to resolve a recall, it’s easier to have your vehicle serviced with less disruption to your life and the activities and people you care about about.”
While Ford already held an advantage over many other startup automakers due to its number of dealerships, this new program allows the legacy brand to leverage its size in a new way. While Tesla and Rivian were clearly the pioneers of this service system here in America, there is no doubt that other major brands will also be looking to implement it in the near future.
