WBB Looks To Keep Winning Streak Alive Sunday Vs. Georgia Tech

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The North Carolina women’s basketball team plays on Sunday for its fifth win in a row, hosting Georgia Tech at Carmichael Arena for a 4 pm tipoff.

No. 17 UNC comes into the game 13-5 overall and 4-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play after winning its last four in a row, with three of those wins coming over ranked teams. Most recently the Tar Heels beat No. 13 Duke 61-56 at home on Thursday.

Georgia Tech is 10-9 overall and 1-7 in ACC play coming off its first conference win of the season on Thursday against Syracuse.

Carolina is celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Sunday, with young girls and boys invited to attend the game following a clinic with the UNC women’s teams.

Tar Heels vs. Yellow Jackets

UNC and Georgia Tech are meeting for the 82nd time in a series that dates back to the 1979-80 season. The Tar Heels lead 60-21 overall after Georgia Tech took last year’s matchup. Prior to that UNC had won four in a row.

• In the last meeting in Chapel Hill, on Feb. 25, 2021, UNC won 84-59. As the Tar Heels celebrated Senior Night, all five starters reached double figures. Then-freshman Deja Kelly led the way with 22 points, which was at that point equal to her career high in scoring.

Noting the Tar Heels

• UNC is coming off a win over No. 13 Duke on Thursday. It was the Tar Heels’ third straight win at home over a ranked team – No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 11 NC State, then No. 13 Duke – marking the first time in program history that Carolina has beaten three ranked teams in consecutive home games. (UNC won at Virginia in the middle of that span.) The Tar Heels limited those three teams, all ranked in the top 13, to an average of 51 points per game.
• Three Tar Heels rank in the conference’s top 10 in scoring: Deja Kelly is fifth with 16.06 ppg, Kennedy Todd-Williams is ninth at 13.89, and Alyssa Ustby is 10th at 13.61. No other school has more than two scorers in the top 20.
• UNC drew a capacity crowd of 6,319 for last Sunday’s win over NC State, the Tar Heels’ first sellout since 2015. A crowd of more than 5,000 – including an all-time high of 1,500 UNC students – came to Thursday’s game vs Duke.
• In a nod to Carolina’s versatility, four different players have scored 20 or more points on 13 occasions in the season’s first 18 games. Deja Kelly has reached 20 six times, Kennedy Todd-Williams four, Eva Hodgson two and Destiny Adams one. A fifth Tar Heel, Alyssa Ustbyhas reached 19 on two occasions.
• Six Tar Heels have led the team in scoring or tied for the lead in at least one game this season. Most recently, freshman Pauline Paris came off the bench to lead UNC with 16 points vs. Notre Dame.
Alyssa Ustby ranks in the ACC’s top 15 in scoring (10th), rebounding (5th), field goal percentage (5th), blocks (9th) and steals (13th).
Eva Hodgson hasn’t missed a free throw since the Iowa State game in Portland in November. She’s 15-15 since then including 4-4 ​​shooting against Duke. Kennedy Todd-Williams also was 4-4 vs Duke.
• UNC’s 10 blocks against Iowa State were the most for a Tar Heel team since the 2017-18 season. The Tar Heels had eight at Virginia and are averaging 4.72 per game, sixth in the ACC and 31st nationally.
• In an average of 16.5 minutes on the court per game, Destiny Adams is tied for ninth in the ACC in blocks (with Alyssa Ustby) with 1.22 per game and ranks 25th in steals (1.4 per game).
• Two Tar Heels are in the top six in the ACC in assist/turnover ratio. Deja Kelly is fifth and Eva Hodgson is sixth, both with 1.9 assists for every turnover. UNC’s team assist-turnover ratio of 1.05 is fourth in the ACC.
• UNC finished nonconference play shooting .658 from the foul line but has improved considerably in conference play. The Tar Heels are shooting .764 over their seven conference games with only one game (Miami at .615) below .700. For the season, UNC is shooting .692, 13th in the league. Carolina’s ACC-only average ranks fifth.
• In ACC games only the Tar Heels lead the league in field goal percentage defense, with opponents shooting .337. In the team’s current four-game ACC winning streak, opponents are shooting just .304. UNC ranks third in scoring defense, allowing 60 ppg – over the past four games, that average is 50.3.
• UNC had been outrebounded in every ACC contest before beating NC State on the boards 45-41. Alyssa Ustby led UNC in that game with a career-best 18 boards. The Tar Heels currently have a -5.7 rebounding margin in conference games, last in the league.
