Kaitlyn Murphy had a goal and an assist, as Aptos High’s girls soccer team knocked off visiting Soquel 3-1 in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League game Thursday.
Soquel’s Lily Montesinos scored on a set goal from long range, and the teams entered the half deadlocked at 1-all.
Gwen Chapman and Angelique Nunez scored goals in the second half for the Mariners. Alexa Castaneda finished with a pair of assists.
Murphy scored in the fifth minute, Chapman scored in the 42nd minute, and Nunez scored in the 57th.
“We made two costly mistakes in the second half,” Knights coach Jose Sierra said. “Give credit to Aptos for capitalizing on the opportunities.”
Mariners goalies Alessandra Zuniga and Evelyn Pini split time and each made three saves.
Aptos (8-3-1, 4-0-0) plays at Harbor (7-6-2, 1-2-2) on Tuesday at 7 pm
Pacific Collegiate 3, Rancho San Juan 1: Rosalyn Bourdow scored in the third and 43rd minutes, and the Pumas won their PCAL Mission Division match Thursday.
Ciara Pommerenke scored in the 35th minute and had a pair of assists. Katya Korobov also had an assist.
PCS keeper Taylin Whitten-Hannah played the first 50 minutes but exited the game with an injury. She had 10 saves and gave up one goal at the end of the first half in extra time. Whitten-Hannah was replaced by Bourdow, who made six saves.
PCS (3-5-0, 1-2-0) hosts Soledad at Soquel High on Monday at 7 pm
Boys soccer
Aptos 1, Soquel 0: Kaleb Plascencia headed in a pass from Andrew Lopez in the 79th minute, and the Mariners posted a shutout in their SCCAL win Thursday.
“The team was explosive, connected passes, made crosses, created plenty of opportunities,” said Roberto Zuniga, the Mariners’ coach.
Aptos (8-5, 3-1) plays at Harbor (10-1-2, 5-0-0) on Tuesday at 5 pm
At Monte Vista Christian 2, Gonzales 0: Seniors Luke Hollingsworth and Evan Mariscal each scored a goal in the Mustangs’ PCAL Cypress Division win Thursday.
MVC faces Marina in a make-up match at Seaside High on Saturday at 4 pm
Boys basketball
Santa Cruz 60, at San Lorenzo Valley 26: The Cardinals threw down four dunks in the opening quarter, which helped them take a 23-8 lead, and they never looked back in the teams’ SCCAL make-up game Thursday.
The teams’ Jan. 6 meetings were postponed due to storm-related power outages.
Sophomore Kirby Seals scored a team-high 14 points for the Cardinals. Ben Dotten had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Aden Cury had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Demeke Smith had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Jacob Sanders scored nine points to lead SLV, and Damien Aguilar chipped in with seven points.
On Friday at 7:30 pm, Santa Cruz (15-3, 4-0) plays at Scotts Valley, while SLV (3-12, 0-5) plays at Harbor.
Stevenson 73, at MVC 41: The Mustangs lost their PCAL Mission Division game Thursday.
Girls basketball
At Stevenson 42, MVC 40: Sophia Tellez scored 11 points in the Mustangs’ narrow PCAL Mission Division loss Thursday. Kayla Rader scored eight points.
Emma Hall scored 16 points for Stevenson, and Sydney Clymo scored 13 points.
MVC hosts Monterey on Monday at 7 p.m
Men’s volleyball
At UC Santa Cruz 3, Cal Lutheran 1: The Banana Slugs opened their season with a 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22 win over the Kingsmen, a fellow NCAA Division III independent program, at the West Field House on Thursday.
Senior outside hitter Colton Jeffrey, a Santa Cruz alum, had 18 kills and six digs. Freshman opposite Noah Fisher had 12 kills, and senior middle blocker/opposite Zachary Thompson had nine kills.
Junior setter Mohan Duvvuri had 23 assists, and setter Leo Tuncer, a freshman out of Santa Cruz, had 15 assists.
Senior libero/outside hitter Maxwell Mednick had six assists and three digs. Junior middle blocker Colby Hurdle had five blocks and three aces.
Ben Weber led the Kingsmen (1-2) with 15 kills, four digs, two assists, and two aces.
UCSC Slug Slam takes place Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Banana Slugs (1-0) host North Park at Kaiser Permanente Arena at 8:30 am, and Cal Lutheran vs. Illinois Wesleyan follows at 10:45 am
The remainder of opening day action moves to the West Field House, where UCSC hosts Edgewood at 1 p.m
Fontbonne faces North Park at 3:15 pm, Cal Lutheran faces Edgewood at 5:30 pm, and Fontbonne vs. Illinois Wesleyan at 7:45 p.m
Men’s basketball
Fresno Pacific 80, at UCSC 45: Eric DeBrine had eight points and eight rebounds in the Banana Slugs’ loss to the NCAA D-II Sunbirds at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Thursday night.
Darrin Person and Kyle Monk each scored 15 points for the Sunbirds (5-12).
UCSC faces Colorado College (7-9) in Colorado Springs on Saturday at noon.
