Apple has announced some powerful new hardware updates for 2023. First up is a new MacBook Pro laptop that comes in 14-inch and 16-inch iterations. These can be configured with either an M2 Pro or M2 Max chip, depending on how much power you need. Also on its way is a new Mac Mini that comes with either an M2 or M2 Pro chip. All of these machines release January 24 and are available to preorder at Amazon and other retailers. Let’s dive in.

All of the new MacBook Pro laptops are incredibly powerful machines. The M2 Pro models have up to 12-core CPU, up to 19-core GPU, up to 32GB unified memory, and 200GB/s memory bandwidth. The M2 Max models get even more intense, with 12-core CPU, up to 38-core GPU, up to 96GB unified memory(!), and 400GB/s memory bandwidth.
Display-wise, they feature what Apple calls Liquid Retina XDR, with “extreme dynamic range” and ProMotion for smooth scrolling and gaming. As for the battery life, the 14-inch model gets up to 12 hours of wireless web browsing or 18 hours of video playback. The 16-inch model has a bigger battery that can get up to 15 hours of browsing and 22 hours of video playback.
And if you’re looking for ports, you’ve come to the right place. Unlike many recent MacBook models, these machines have a good number of built-in ports. You get a MagSafe 3 port for charging, plus three Thunderbolt 4 ports, a headphone jack, an HDMI out, and a memory card slot.

As with previous models, the Mac Mini is a delightfully compact computer, but the M2 or M2 Pro chip gives it plenty of oomph. The M2 chip includes an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, plus up to 24GB of unified memory and 100GB/s memory bandwidth. The M2 Pro chip has up to a 12-core CPU, up to 19-core GPU, up to 32GB unified memory, and 200GB/s memory bandwidth.
Unlike many of Apple’s devices (with the exception of the MBP models above), the 2023 Mac Mini offers a decent number of ports. It has an Ethernet port for fast internet. It has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-A ports. It also has a headphone jack (ahem, unlike iPhones) and an HDMI port to connect a monitor.
I should mention that all the Mac Mini comes with is the device itself, plus a power cord. That means you’ll need an HDMI cable and display to connect it to, plus a mouse and keyboard. You can check it out on Apple if you want more customization options beyond what Amazon has on offer.
